Український рушник. Стелиться, ніби дорога. Вабить, наче вічність. Зачаровує, мов пісня. Він є неодмінним атрибутом народного побуту, весільної обрядовості й традиційної окраси українських хат.
Полтавські рушники здебільшого оздоблені розкішними рослинними орнаментами – це «дерево життя», що символізує природу-матір, популярним є зображення птахів, що означає кохання та щастя, часто зустрічається також «дерево-квітка», «вазон із квітами». Мотиви «вазона», «дерева» скрізь зберігають один і той самий принцип у зображенні рослин. На рушниках квіти, пуп’янки виглядають площинно, внутрішню будову квітки передано різними рушниковими заповненнями. Ці мотиви мають завжди свій логічний початок і завершення. То можуть бути вазони найрізноманітнішої конфігурації: видовженої форми вази, округлих обрисів глечик, типовий за формою для кераміки Полтавщини.
Традиційна техніка вишивання на Полтавщині – «тамбурний шов». Здебільшого полтавські рушники виконані в червоному кольорі, інколи з невеликим вкрапленням синього. Крім рушників, у цій техніці вишивали божники, сорочки, скатертини, підзори. Головне в ній – поєднання тла і вишивки червоного та білого кольорів; легкі хвилясті лінії тамбурного шва мерехтливо окреслюють вибагливі орнаментальні мотиви рослинного характеру.
Вишитий рушник донині не втратив свого значення в побуті. І тепер ним прикрашають інтер’єри помешкань, вівтарі та ікони в церквах. І надалі він залишається атрибутом народних звичаїв та обрядів.
Колекція традиційної полтавської вишивки початку ХХ століття (рушники та скатертини) зберігається в експозиції Меморіального музею-садиби гончарської родини Пошивайлів. Її зібрала для домашнього музею Явдоха Пошивайло. Ця колекція вишивки безумовно є окрасою інтер’єру.
