Стою засмучений, мовчазний, скам’янілий
біля двох могильних горбочків
з одинаковими залізними хрестами,
що схожі на розкинуті в розпачі руки.
Важко гупає в грудях встривожене серце,
а горло перехопив нервовий спазм.
Шанобливо схиляюсь і за давньою звичкою, коли заходив до діда і баби додому
здоровкаюсь, ледве чутно ворушачи губами:
Гавриле Никифоровичу! Явдохо Данилівно!
Добридень! Минув я цього разу вашу хату,
й на кладовище до вас оце прийшов.
Лежите ви нині під товстим шаром землі,
з вашої плоті виростає зелена трава,
а з кісток піднімаються вгору дерева,
навіки сплітаючись своїм корінням,
бо і під землею ви нерозлучимі.
Правда, не можете дотягтися одне до одного,
щоб відчути звичну близькість ваших тіл,
зовсім не чуєте одне одного і не можете
поскаржитись на свої старі болячки і муки,
а очі не бачать тління вашої плоті.
Та в стражданнях корчаться ваші тіла,
проростаючи і перетворюючись в прах.
А душі ваші, випроставшись із могил,
на незримих і невагомих крилах
літають по всьому білому світу,
будячи в людях добру згадку про себе
і розносячи врізнобіч ваші тривоги і думи:
про дітей ваших, внуків і правнуків,
про долю любимого вами гончарства в Опішні,
що вже при вас безнадійно занепадало;
вашу досаду по тому, що на Україні нашій
неспокійно і тяжко живеться простому люду,
що править усим насильство, обман і грабіж,
які стали такими звичними і буденними,
а засліплені грошима і багатством люди
стають все мізернішими й нецікавими,
забувають все те, що добром і красою було.
Явдохо Данилівно і Гавриле Никифоровичу!
Не розуміють ці люди, що життя – лише мить,
що в безмежному часі вони, як метеори згорять,
і без сліда загубляться в безвісті їх імена,
Ви ж будете жити в віках, бо кераміка вічна,
вічна краса і добро, які щедро дарили ви людям.
Породжені опішненською землею і гончарюванням,
обпалені вогнем горна і війною, випробувані бідою,
ви погасли, як гасне животворне вогнище.
Обігрівши одних і ставши джерелом надихнувши других,
забрані від усіх нас циганкою-смертю,
спіть спокійно під травами і деревами,
бережені синами, внуками і правнуками.
І справа гончарська в Опішні не вмре, не загине,
бо вони естафету гончарства від вас прийняли.
А ваші добрі і чисті душі, наче журавлі,
будуть літати завжди і повсюди.
Невмолимо біжать дні одні за другими,
з’єднуючись в місяці, а місяці в роки.
Гавриле Никифоровичу! Явдохо Данилівно!
Вам віднині належить тільки глуха ніч,
що навалилась на вас чорним каменем.
І ранкові промені вже не розбудять вас.
Вже не почуєте ви пташиний спів ранковий.
Я ж не почую вже ваші щирі вітання.
Вже не буде частування і довгих щирих розмов.
А як би хотілось все це повернути назад.
І разом дивитись на сонце і зорі, квіти і трави,
що здійснюють свій одвічний круговорот.
