До нашого часу дійшло небагато творів давнього українського малярства. У колекції Меморіального музею-садиби гончарської родини Пошивайлів експонується декілька картин невідомих народних художників, виконаних на полотні, фанері, склі. Фундатор Музею-садиби Явдоха Пошивайло любила народну картину, вміла її цінувати, тонко розумілася на народному малярстві, оскільки сама була неперевершеною малювальницею. Вона зуміла віднайти та зберегти найкращі зразки. Серед них – найбільш поширені й улюблені в народі сюжети: «Наталка», «Тарас Шевченко», «Тихий куток», «Сільський краєвид», «Село», «Дорога до вітряка». Особливості сюжетних народних картин пов’язані з місцевістю, де народжуються твори: тамтешні церкви, вітряки, вулички й хати, річки й ставочки.
Розглядаючи народні картини, відчуваєш, що вони, передусім, покликані задовольнити духовні потреби людини. Типовий елемент давніх українських пейзажів – сільська ідилія, виплекана народною уявою впродовж віків. У зелені садків і струнких тополь видніються білесенькі хатки, десь на пагорбі крутить розлогими крилами вітряк. Поряд тихенько в’ється річечка, навіюючи спокій, романтичну замріяність, гармонійну умиротвореність. Іноді на картинах бачимо лебедів – символ любові, родинного щастя й благодаті. Саме в цей казковий світ лине душа українців у найсокровенніших мріях і духовних спрямуваннях. Сюжет картин «Наталка» запозичений із п’єси Івана Котляревського «Наталка-Полтавка». Народні маляри зображують її в українському вбранні. Елементи людської фігури передають спрощено, без анатомічних подробиць, але такі картини не втрачають емоційної сили. Жодному іншому твору не судилося прожити таке довге життя в стількох варіантах, повтореннях, копіях.
Погляди відвідувачів Музею-садиби часто зупиняються на портреті Тараса Шевченка. Зазвичай, його зображують із вольовим обличчям, похмурим поглядом, одягненим у смушеву шапку, кожух, з-під якого видніється сорочка. В даному випадку народний художник показав своє бачення образу Великого Кобзаря, додаючи свої елементи: обличчя усміхнене, сорочка із краваткою.
Без перебільшення, українська народна картина постає своєрідним «вікном» у душу майстра, а отже, і всього народу, а її всебічне вивчення й правильне прочитання дозволить пізнати духовні дивосвіти українства, його самобутню культурну спадщину.
