Іграшка стала першоджерелом виникнення нового явища в історії дрібної пластики Опішного – сюжетної скульптури, яка від 1950-х років довгий час входила до асортименту виробів заводу «Художній керамік». Олександра Селюченко, Гаврило та Микола Пошивайли, Василь Омеляненко, Михайло Китриш, Розалія Чабаненко, Настя Білик-Пошивайло, Ганна Діденко займалися нею і вдома.
За кілька десятиліть розвитку виробилося певне коло сюжетів, сформувалися художньо-стильові особливості щодо манери ліплення, композиційної побудови, принципів декорування. Вирізняються багатофігурні композиції («Біля криниці», «Сорочинські ярмарки», «Весілля», «Пташниця» тощо) та скульптура малих форм: поодинокі зображення жінки, козака, дівчини, які доповнюються жанровими мотивами, літературні персонажі, фантастичні образи.
Меморіальний музей-садиба гончарської родини Пошивайлів репрезентує сюжетні композиції відомих в Україні спадкових гончарів Гаврила та Миколи Пошивайлів. Гаврило Ничипорович Пошивайло (07.04.1909 – 24.01.1991) – один із перших опішненських гончарів розробив унікальні композиції на теми Сорочинських ярмарків, оскільки впродовж другої половини 1970-х – 1980-х років був постійним їхнім учасником, під впливом яких і побачили світ «ярмаркові герої» в глині.
Сюжетні композиції Миколи Пошивайла (1930 р.н.) – це уява, фантазія майстра. За тематичними ознаками їх можна поділити на дві групи: сільськогосподарська («Тракторист», «Сімейна ланка», «Честь і слава Вам, жінки-хлібороби», «Ласкаво просимо у дояри») й гумористична («На баштані», «Козаки за варениками», «Багатий урожай», «Пацюк» (гоголівський герой), «Звірі за чаєм»).
Побудова композицій складна: на одній основі розташовано декілька скульптур, об’єднаних одним мотивом, більшість деталей передано стилістично (сільськогосподарська техніка, баштан тощо), інші дещо натуралістично (дівчата-трактористки, дояри, козаки, спортсмен, звірі). Майстер демонструє тонке відчуття специфіки глини, регенерує нові ідеї, нові варіанти пластичних рішень, вносить нові елементи декору, в його роботах відсутнє копіювання та запозичення в інших. Микола Пошивайло єдиний, хто в 1970-х – 1980-х роках розробив такі теми сюжетних композицій. Вони зрозумілі для сприйняття, викликають подив, зачарування, несуть позитивну енергію, заряд гумору.
Такі композиції мають своїх прихильників і шанувальників. І саме вони підтверджують думку про несумісність народного мистецтва й кітчу.
